  • - Productive Relationships Between Parents of People with Developmental Disabilities and Service Workers
    af John O'Brien
    169,95 kr.

This paper addresses the question of what it takes for parents of people with developmental disabilities and service workers to build and maintain productive relationships. It considers whether such a focus compromises principles of self-determination and suggests that people with strong support actually have more autonomy. Eleven suggestions for improving communication between parents and service workers are offered such as remembering differences in history between parents and service providers and expanding the individual's nework of relationships. The importance of honoring powerful emotions is stressed, noting that both parents and service workers often believe they are the weaker partners in the relationship. Other principles of relationship building include naming conflicts, naming fears, and recognizing cultural differences. The metaphor of "holding 10,000 details" is used to describe the parents' and service workers' role. These details are also shown to be a source of inequality, the root of power transactions, the source of conflicts and overprotection, and closely related to the big idea of self-determination. The paper concludes by stressing that the individual with a developmental disability must be seen as a whole person in relationship to others and in their experience of disability.

Stories of restlessness, disruption, conflagrations, faraday tents, myth-makers, bubble-worlds, local nomads, transformation, resilience and the power of the exponential. The VISIONS 2100 Project was launched at the COP21 conference in Paris in 2015. In the first instalment, Stories from your Future, the 80 contributors told of their hopes and fears for the long term. This took away the practicalities of today and considered what they really wanted. The stories were challenging, amazing and sometimes heart-warming. But 'vision without action is merely a dream' so the hard work of action must accelerate. The 82 contributors to 'Stories from 2030' work on identifying risks, harnessing finance, developing or deploying solutions and driving government action. They are the people that are driving the critical actions of this decade. In their stories, they address climate justice, collaboration across countries, companies and communities, adaptation of cities and economies, of ecosystems and biodiversity, of health and wellbeing. They tell what you can do to help. Contributors are from business, innovation, finance, journalism, politics, storytelling and the environment. Many are unsung heroes delivering immeasurable progress for world. Some have a bigger stage, such as Connie Hedegaard, Tony Juniper, Sir David King FRS, David Lammy MP, Katharine Hayhoe, Hunter Lovins, Jules Kortenhorst, Achim Steiner, Sharan Burrow and Bill McKibben. Read their stories as they report back from 2030 and decide on the part you will play this decade. It is time to stir!

French priests enter a war zone where captured Westerners are paraded before their captors, tortured, and then beheaded. Their desecrated bodies get dumped by the roadside. Iraq in 2007? The Gaza Strip? Western Afghanistan? No. A place more dangerous: Canada in the 1600s. On rivers and in forests, Iroquois slaughter Huron and Europeans kill for land and power. It's a landscape of blood and horror whose viciousness eclipses the terrorism that shocks us today. Into this iniquitous land go dozens of stouthearted Jesuits, the purest examples of Roman Catholic virtue our Western continent has ever seen. Their purpose? To baptize souls and preach the gospel to savages whose degraded, vicious lives cry out for the light of Christ. Many of these Jesuits were murdered, and today eight of them are saints. Six were priests: Isaac Jogues, Jean de Br beuf, Gabriel Lalemant, Antoine Daniel, Charles Garnier, and No l Chabanel; two were lay assistants: Ren Goupil and Jean Lalande. They are the Jesuit Martyrs of North America, and this is their story. From letters these brave men wrote to their superiors by the light of Indian campfires or while skimming lovely waters in swift canoes, John A. O'Brien has crafted the terrifying, inspiring, and true tale of the dangerous struggle they engaged in for enormous stakes: the salvation of countless souls mired in darkness. Patient, charitable, and heedless of their own lives, these eight Jesuits spoke constantly of Jesus, baptized thousands, and even in the shadow of death brought them the consoling graces of the Sacraments. Between times they cared for souls dying of smallpox, cleaned festering wounds, and day in and day out returned love for hatred, blessings for curses, and prayers for abuse. This book tells of these good men who sought nothing less than the conversion of a continent. Their zeal won for them the imperishable crown of martyrdom and sanctified with their holy blood the soil of North America.
