Louis Marie Julien Viaud dit Pierre Loti, né le 14 janvier 1850 à Rochefort et mort le 10 juin 1923 à Hendaye, est un écrivain et officier de marine français. Pierre Loti, dont une grande partie de l'oeuvre est d'inspiration autobiographique, s'est nourri de ses voyages pour écrire ses romans, par exemple à Tahiti pour Le Mariage de Loti (Rarahu) (1882), au Sénégal pour Le Roman d'un spahi (1881) ou au Japon pour Madame Chrysanthème (1887).

Loti a voyagé au Japon en 1885, il en rapporta l'inspiration de ce roman. Le 9 juillet 1885, dès son arrivée à Nagasaki, Loti épouse par contrat d'un mois renouvelable, une jeune Japonaise de 18 ans, Okané-San baptisée Kiku-San (Madame Chrysanthème). Le 12 août, âgé de 35 ans, il quitte Nagasaki. Ce mariage auquel les parents ont donné leur consentement a été arrangé par un agent et enregistré par la police locale. Il ne dure que le temps du séjour et la jeune fille pourra par la suite se marier avec un Japonais. Cette pratique peut paraître curieuse mais elle est alors courante au Japon, même si elle s'avère coûteuse pour l'étranger. Paru un an après Pêcheur d'Islande, en 1888, ce roman connaît un immense succès et contribue à la renommée de Pierre Loti. Il participe à l'intérêt porté en France pour l'Extrême-Orient et le Japon en particulier malgré la description mitigée qu'en fait Loti.

Vers 1880, Jean est spahi à Saint-Louis du Sénégal et effectue son service militaire. Jean est bien triste d'avoir quitté ses parents et sa fiancée Jeanne. Mais il rencontre tout de même l'amour auprès d'une élégante dame: Cora. Mais celle-ci le trahit. Le coeur brisé, Jean est perdu. Mais une jeune personne va le réconforter, il s'agit d'une jeune noire nommée Fatou-gaye. Elle va devenir la maîtresse du spahi durant trois ans. Puis un jour, on veut envoyer Jean à Alger mais celui-ci accepte la demande d'un camarade originaire d'Algérie de permuter et choisit de passer en Afrique les deux ans de service qui lui restent à accomplir. Il part alors en Guinée en emmenant Fatou-gaye.

Julien Viaud, Jeune écrivain, fait une escale de six mois à Tahiti, où les femmes le baptisent Loti du nom d'une fleur tropicale que lui donne la reine Pomaré. Le jeune écrivain l'adopte comme nom de plume dès 1876. Il est séduit par la beauté de la jeune Rarahu, et l'idylle polynésienne se poursuit dans les îles, décor enchanteur, mais aussi peuplé de fantômes. Loti fréquente la reine Pomaré, vieillissante et dont la descendance est rongée d'un mal héréditaire. Il cherche aussi à rencontrer Taïmaha, qui fut la maîtresse de son frère George, venu là treize ans plus tôt, et dont elle eut des enfants. La quête est décevante, Loti découvre que les deux garçons qu'on lui présente ne sont pas de George...
