Denis Diderot und Ernst Moritz Arndt legen in diesem Werk ihre Vorstellungen und Erkenntnisse über das Grundgesetz der Natur dar. Dabei geht es um die grundlegenden Gesetzmäßigkeiten, die die Natur beherrschen und die oft von den Menschen missachtet werden. Die beiden Autoren argumentieren dabei insbesondere auch gegen die Vorstellungen mancher theologischer Konzepte, die die Natur als bloßes Werkzeug des Menschen betrachten.
