Madame Butterfly is a three-act opera written by the Italian composer Giacomo Puccini in 1906. The story is based on a short story by John Luther Long and a play by David Belasco. The opera tells the tragic story of a young Japanese geisha named Cio-Cio-San, also known as Butterfly, who falls in love with an American naval officer named Pinkerton. Despite warnings from her family and friends, Butterfly marries Pinkerton, believing that he loves her and will return to her. However, Pinkerton leaves Japan and Butterfly behind, only to return three years later with his American wife. Devastated by Pinkerton's betrayal, Butterfly ultimately takes her own life. The opera is known for its beautiful music, including the famous aria ""Un bel di vedremo"" and the duet ""Viene la sera.""
