Santo Domingo, the primate of America: Only six years after the discovery by Christopher Columbus in 1498, New World had its first capital Santo Domingo. Grand Admiral first sighted land on the island he called San Salvador, landed in the Western Hemisphere for the first time on the east coast of Cuba, but continued way further southeast to the neighboring island dubbed Hispaniola, or Little Spain.
