Narrative of an Expedition in HMS Terror

First published in 1838, this account by the British naval officer Sir George Back (1796-1878) traces his ill-fated 1836-7 Arctic expedition aboard the bomb vessel HMS Terror, which became trapped in ice for ten months. This remains a vivid record of survival in the face of adversity.
