Bag om Occlusion in Dentistry

Occlusion is a fundamental to practice of dentistry, in providing a biologically functional restoration and for comprehensive patient care. It is the integrated relationship of tooth, periodontium, TMJ and neuromuscular system. There is complex interaction of many components of masticatory system. Changes in one component affect the entire system. Before restoration is planned, one should see all components of stomatognathic system to conform to existing occlusal pattern and not to disturb it. Thus a modern concept of occlusion must include the idea of an integrated system of functional units involving teeth, joints, and muscles of the head and neck. The solutions to problems such as bruxism, orthodontic relapse, denture instability, and periodontal trauma require concepts of occlusion that extend well beyond static arrangements of teeth, occlusal contacts, and jaw position.Instead of finding out the reasons for the failure of our procedures, it is better to understand and respect the dentofacial system to avoid such failures. Within the limitation of this article, we have discussed the basics of occlusion and its role in day to-day practice.
