On the Power of Machines

John Banks (1740-1805) lectured on natural philosophy, showing practising engineers, mechanics and artisans how they could benefit from expanding their knowledge. This 1803 work draws on theory and experiment to investigate and compute the workings of contemporary machines such as watermills, pumps, and steam engines.
