Plato's forms, mathematics and astronomy

In his Laws Plato recommends that the land of the colony whose constitution is planned in this dialogue be divided into a highly composite number of plots, 5040, a suggestion reflecting the close link between practical affairs and mathematics in his philosophy: the forms of mathematical objects can exhaust the range of forms and mathematical astronomy paves the way for the practical interests of his philosophy of forms.
