Sir Roderick Impey Murchison (1792-1871) revised his earlier work, The Silurian System (1839), and synthesised the latest research on this geological period in this 1854 publication. Detailed engravings of fossils, including crustaceans, cephalopods and fish, accompany the text, which remains important in the history of nineteenth-century geology and palaeontology.
