This volume contains an essay in the shape of a series of lectures, and with a twofold object. On the one hand the essay deals not so much with the minuter details as with the connections, the linkages, the general growth, of modern philosophical thought since the 17th century. On the other hand the author's purpose is constructive as well as expository.
