The Mahavamsa (1908)

The Mahavamsa is a historical text written in the Pali language that chronicles the history of Sri Lanka from the arrival of Prince Vijaya in 543 BCE to the reign of King Mahasena in the 4th century CE. The book is divided into three parts: the first part describes the legendary origins of the Sinhalese people, the second part covers the reigns of the early kings of Sri Lanka, and the third part focuses on the rise of Buddhism in the country.The Mahavamsa was first translated into English by German scholar Wilhelm Geiger in 1908. Geiger's translation includes extensive notes and commentary, providing context and historical background for the events described in the text.
