The Right Road Lost

Charles Hazzard arrives in Portland, Maine in 1880 as the protege of a renowned mental healer, but only two years later leaves the city in disgrace after becoming romantically involved with a patient. Believing he has failed both his mentor and his patient, a young woman with dark secrets and intense needs, Hazzard flees to Manaus, Brazil, a city in the jungle, 1,000 miles up the Amazon River. Although he tries to keep to himself, he is drawn into Manaus's rhythms. He accumulates wealth and has to contend with the violence and greed that lurk behind Manaus's marble mansions. Eventually he is entrusted with the care of a young woman and a little girl who have no one else to rely upon. Hazzard must move on once more, but this time he is not alone. Where should they go? How can he create a safe life for them? And what kind of a future will they discover together?
