The Shame of Motley is a historical fiction novel written by Rafael Sabatini. The story is set in medieval England and follows the life of a young man named Gaston de Luynes, who is forced to flee his home after being falsely accused of a crime. He takes on the guise of a court jester named Motley and joins the retinue of Prince John, the brother of King Richard the Lionheart. As Motley, Gaston is able to travel throughout England, gathering information and plotting against those who wronged him. Along the way, he falls in love with a beautiful woman named Alys, who is also caught up in the political intrigue of the time.
