The Shaughraun

- An Original Drama In Three Acts (1889)

Bag om The Shaughraun

""The Shaughraun"" is a three-act play written by Dion Boucicault and first performed in 1874. Set in rural Ireland in the mid-19th century, the play follows the adventures of Conn, a charming and roguish young man known as the Shaughraun (Irish for ""vagabond""). Conn becomes embroiled in a plot to overthrow the British authorities and free a group of Irish rebels who are being held captive. Along the way, he falls in love with a wealthy Englishwoman named Claire, who is also being held captive by the rebels. The play is a mix of comedy, romance, and adventure, and features colorful characters such as the conniving lawyer Corry Kinchela, the bumbling police sergeant Jones, and the fierce rebel leader Molineux. Boucicault's play was hugely popular in its time and has been revived numerous times since its original production. It is considered a classic of Irish drama and a prime example of the ""stage-Irish"" genre, which often portrayed Irish characters as caricatures or stereotypes. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
