French author Henri Ren Albert Guy de Maupassant (1850 - 1893) was a pioneer of the modern short story and is best recognised for works like 'The Necklace', 'Pierre et Jean', and 'Une Vie'. His novel ‘Bel Ami’ was made into a film in 2012, starring Uma Thurman and Robert Pattinson.
