The poems in this first of its kind collection range from short meditations on erotic moments to heady songs of love, written by poets from India, Arabia, Persia, and Japan, among other romantic lands. These 50 stirring love poems were personally collected and translated by the legendary Edward Powys Mathers. Mathers gained widespread fame in the early 20th century as a translator of numerous works from both the near and far east. Mathers, inventor of the modern crossword puzzle, spent years selecting these poems, and carefully translated them taking pains to preserve their delicate rhythms and stunning imagery.
