This book, originally a Masters thesis, looks at the four phases of development for education in prisons in England from 1630 to 1877, when prisons came under central government control. It covers the work of John Bellers, the SPCK, John Howard, Elizabeth Fry, Sarah Martin, and others. It looks at what happened in a range of institutions, from Debtor's Prisons, Bridewells, Houses of Correction, and the Hulks.
