  • - Living with EDS and chronic pain
    af Lynne D M Noble
    207,95 kr.

This is a story about the author who has spent a lifetime searching for the answer to her chronic pain. Slowly and piece by piece she gathers apparently unrelated clues over a lifetime unaware of their association. Indeed the many professionals that she had been referred to over the years could not piece the clues together in any coherent fashion. However, a chance encounter with a fifth cousin provides the final missing piece of the puzzle. A gene for a particular disorder is traced back many generations and suddenly the picture is recognised for what it is.This book describes the often lonely and isolating journey that undiagnosed disease can often take you down. It describes how professionals can add to the suffering by their unwillingness to acknowledge any pain which had not yet been legitimised through a medical diagnosis. The author highlights that many chronic diseases can take many, many years to be identified for what they are and suggests ways of not only coping with connective tissue diseases such as EDS but how to deal with professionals who are unwilling or unable to acknowledge a - as yet- undiagnosed illness. The author supplies plenty of photographs showing the signs of her own journey which were captured on her tablet and which underline the diversity of signs and symptoms which are characteristic of connective tissue disease.

Our current eating habits have largely excluded an important nutrient that is essential for the synthesis of good connective tissue. Without it, we cannot form proper bone, skin, tendons, ligaments and cartilage; in fact, most of what gives us structure and allows us to move without pain and dislocation. This remarkable amino acid also helps to improve the immune system, restores sleep, reduces seizure activity and anxiety as well as helping to alleviate depressive episodes. Once incorporated into diets on a daily basis, this forgotten nutrient is more or less eliminated from our diets and to our detriment. It does not take long to learn how to incorporate this nutrient into our diets so that we have the correct building blocks available to build up healthy connective tissue. This book is a collection of easy recipes showing you how to adapt favourite recipes so that they provide the best nutrients required to form healthy connective tissue.

Antibiotic resistant bacteria have already arrived on our doorstep which leaves us vulnerable to many infections once treated effectively by them. Antibiotics do not work on the many viruses that are running around, neither are they effective on fungal infections. In fact, the only reasonably effective treatment for viruses are vaccination and this is only limited to a few illnesses. Our innate and adaptive immune system, for the most part, can deal effectively with most infections which invade the body but what is the difference between the innate and adaptive immune system and how can we harness the power of this amazing part of our body which few people, give scant attention to. What happens when our immune system is struggling? Can we strengthen it so that it can do its job properly? If so, how? The author describes many of the antimicrobial substances which are readily available, in food which we can use to strengthen our own immune system at times of illness and when our bodily resources are compromised. She describes which common infective agents are susceptible to these. She also describes the difference between the innate immune system and the adaptive immune system and how they work together to defend the integrity of the body. Finally, she illustrates how some old-fashioned wisdom really shows that Granny knew best when it came to treating illness. A book full of wisdom and good sense for those who want an alternative solution to antibiotics and a remedy for those infections which do not have a satisfactory pharmaceutical answer.

The first in a semi-autobiographical trilogy, The Prejudged tells of a young girl brought up in West Yorkshire, England in the 1950's. The author starts with her very earliest memory which took place before she was a year old when she recalls her mother hanging her nappies up on the line. The author goes on to develop some very unusual hobbies, studying genetics at the age of eight and preserving spiders in 2% formaldehyde before labelling them with their Latin names. Lynne's love of nature is encapsulated in her writing throughout. It is second only to the love that the author had for her dad who encouraged and supported his daughter throughout some difficult times as Lynne was born with cerebral palsy and another undiagnosed condition. At a time when disability prejudices were rife, this book movingly tells of the struggles of a bewildered young girl trying to make sense of the hostility she encountered. This is a profoundly moving book which shows how one person navigates obstacles which would defeat most people. It is profoundly moving and the writer's description of events as she looks back over her life will not leave you unmoved. It is a testimony to the insuperability of the human spirit.

The second in a trilogy detailing a disabled mother bringing up three children in a particularly turbulent time in British history. It is only with a great deal of grit and determination that the author not only survives living 40% below the poverty line but also teaches the community in which she lives how to do so. On entering the workplace she effects great changes in the field of care bringing back hope and dignity to the elderly infirm who'd had to conform to rules set by those supposed to be caring for them. Rules which had been instigated to make the carer's lives easier rather than enhance patient care. The author then successfully fosters deeply disturbed children. The joys and difficulties are described with much humour and love for those in her charge. Insightful, funny, thought provoking and very moving. You will laugh and you will cry.

For far too long individuals with EDS have been informed that their weight gain is a result of taking more calories in than they are expending. Embarking on a calorie restricted diet does not appear to change the outcome though. Their efforts often leave them feeling deflated and angry. The conflicting opinions may drive a rift between themselves and those giving health care. The author states that calorie restricted diets, in those with chronic conditions, like EDS are often counterproductive because there are many other reasons why weight gain occurs. It is not just a case of overeating. Cutting calories may mean that the condition worsens due to inadequate nutrition. In addition, it will not address the real reason for that weight gain. The author sympathetically and expertly cuts through the current thinking about weight gain and reveals the real reasons why those with EDS may find it so difficult to lose weight. This book is a revelation which anyone with a chronic condition should consider reading.

This autobiographical account which is the third in the trilogy which follows Where the Blackbird Never Sings, describes the author's life up to the present day. In it she describes the rich diversity of people she meets as she sojourns in life - many of whom have disabilities or are elderly. She meets people with chronic or life limiting illness. She meets people struggling with mental health issues and those with ASD, dyspraxia or ADHD. None of these people are, as society portray them, a drain on society's resources. These people are a vibrant community of resourceful and intelligent individuals without whose input, society would be much poorer. Lynne through sheer determination and resourcefulness has found a path through poverty and prejudice to the academic achievement which she had dreamed about. She qualified in education and health and social care undertaking research into health and educational issues. This sees her receiving many prestigious awards. She also worked as media adviser and was a serving member of the Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman. This book sees her meeting her husband, Michael without whose support she could not have set up the projects for the marginalised in the community. Shortly after meeting her husband, the author was diagnosed with a serious condition but still continues to challenge the injustices which so many of the vulnerable are on the receiving end of. As in her first two books of the trilogy, the author often reflects on past events and what she has learned from them. This is a book of courage and triumph and of overcoming. It is not just about surviving against all the odds, it is about endurance and believing that there is something better. Just as in the first two books of the trilogy, this book will not leave you unmoved. It is profoundly unsettling, humorous and thought provoking. It will make you laugh and it will make you cry.It will not leave you unchanged. The whole series are a must for anyone who works with people - social workers, health workers etc - it will change your perception of those who are least valued in society. She also describes the home education of her adopted son. This book is dedicated to those with Motor Neurone Disease and a percentage of the royalties from this book are donated to the local branch of this charity.

If osteoarthritis is degenerative why are anti-inflammatories prescribed? This book answers these questions and many more. It explains what happens in osteoarthritis, why the pain occurs and more importantly how you can take control of this common but painful condition using traditional and alternative medicine.

While we start to age the moment we are born, the topic of the ageing process appears to be one that is viewed negatively when individuals reach middle age - commonly thought to be around the age of fifty - with a general resignation that hair loss or thinning is inevitable or skin will become wrinkled contributing to a huge sense of loss at passing youth. When people visit their health care providers, they are informed that their aches and pains are just part of the ageing process and that it should be accepted along with a prescription for analgesics and cholesterol lowering medications at the very least. The author argues that normal ageing processes have nothing to do with pain, lack of youthful vitality or inevitable skin and hair changes. Most of these changes occur due to deficiencies which tend to occur more often in the older generation due to poorer absorption in the gastrointestinal tract, poor dietary habits and an inability to aborb nutrients as well due to medications and specific nutrient deficiences all of which can be addressed quite easily so that reversal of the allegedly negative impact of the ageing process, begins immediately. Balance is restored, good quality sleep returns, aches and pains disappear, and skin takes on a healthy colour. These can be achieved in less than one month. In addition, the author includes treatment protocols for well known health condtions affecting this particular age group including tinnitus, cancer, H pylori and pain, among others. A must have book for those who wish to avoid some of the negative aspects of ageing..

Lymphoedema is a chronic disease which can cause unsightly swelling in any part of the body due to a damaged lymphatic system. The symptoms of lymphoedema are increasing disability, disfigurement and pain. The current treatment is to wear compression garments 24 hours a day and apply massage to try and encourage the stagnant lymph to move through the system. However, all the while the risk of infection is very high.Lymphoedema can occur after surgery or during cancer therapy treatment; sometimes this can occur immediately after the event or, in some cases, it can occur years later. The fact that lymphoedema can occur years after surgery, when some lymph nodes may have been removed suggest that the remaining lymph nodes have been able to cope until something has occurred that has tipped the balance. Once thought to be irreversible and due to a plumbing problem, a ground breaking study has now uncovered the molecular mechanism responsible for triggering lymphoedema. Lymphoedema is now known to be due to inflammation - not a plumbing problem. This suggests that even if some lymph nodes have been removed they are not the direct cause of the lymphoedema. The illness or injury necessitating their removal, or responsible for their damage, has set up an inflammatory response. It is this that needs to be addressed.Lymphoedema was first found to be a problem due to inflammation when studies showed that ketoprofen - an anti-inflammatory - was successful in alleviating the symptoms of lymphoedema. While a prescription drug to reverse this mechanism is still in the offing there are a number of nutritional substances which can inhibit the same inflammatory processes that are specific to the genesis and progression of lymphoedema. They work on the same principle to reduce and reverse the damaging effects of inflammation on the lymphatic system. This book is intended to inform lymphoedema patients of the latest - and successful -research about this condition and how this this knowledge can be applied now by adapting the diet so that the inflammatory changes that fuel the progression of lymphoedema are inhibited. The author describes simply and clearly what causes the debilitaing changes and, just as simply, shows what can inhibit the underlying aetiology, through diet using foods and supplements which are easily available

What is obesity? Does the BMI measure it and if not, why was it invented? Is weight gain all down to too many calories going in and not enough being expended or are there are other reasons for weight gain? Is it possible to lose weight without dieting and, if so, how? Which common medications can cause rapid weight gain and which common mineral can do the job of an oft prescribed medication for nerve pain which often causes massive weight gain? Are all calories equal? Well no, there are some foods that are recommended in calorie controlled diets that can actually cause weight gain. How can some bread cause weight gain and others not and no! it isn't all to do with whether it is wholemeal or white bread. Can exercise actually increase weight and, if so, how? What do diuretics have to do with gaining weight - they do, but how? What impact does yellow light have on weight? All these and many other questions are answered in this book. It is the ultimate guide for those who don't do diets but want to know why they gained weight and more importantly how to lose it - simply and without stress. . 'Going on a diet' appeared to be a form of self-flagellation - a punishment for being 'greedy' for eating more calories that we required. After all, we are told, 'all calories are the same.' But what if that is not true? Is it really that simple? What about those people who do diet, rigidly eating 'all the right things' but do not appear to lose an ounce? Is there a reason for that? Well yes, there is. Not all calories are equal but the calories in some types of chocolate are less likely to cause weight gain.. It is quite possible to lose weight, quickly, healthily and without hunger on the chocolate diet. There is very sound scientific evidence for this which I will share with you in this book. The chocolate diet is not suitable for everyone though. There are contraindications for those with: -Alcoholism-Cystic fibrosis-Those individuals who have medical conditions relating to the thyroid-Diabetes-AnginaThose who are prone to migraine attacks after eating chocolate. Those with connective tissue disordersThis book is concise and to the point, giving the science behine why chocolate can help you lose weight and further how it can be used as part of your daily diet. You will be amazed at what you thought you knew, does not apply when ti comes to losing weight. Chocolate really is the dieters friend.

We talk about identity a great deal but rarely do we ever pull apart this concept to truly understand what it really means yet our self-esteem is dependent on how we see ourselves and this can impact on so many areas of our lives. Poor self-esteem can disrupt our confidence, our life chances, our relationships and our ability to look after ourselves. Poor self-esteem is found in those who are vulnerable to mental health problems such as stress, anxiety and depression. The turnaround is, if we can help change identity will that impact positively on mental health? If so, how can that be achieved? The workbook focuses on core constructs and fluid identities and how these are either inherited or formed by others at vulnerable times in our lives. In addition, challenges in lives create new identities for us. These help strengthen us until we have well integrated and robust identities which help us weather most eventualities in life. Those individuals who wish to be people helpers will learn much from this 5 week course with an optional sixth week attached. It is always recommended that the course is undertaken first - by an individual preferably in small group work but it can be worked on alone - before working with others. It is suitable for church groups, people helpers in general, qualified counsellors and those working with vulnerable clients in whatever capacity. It is not suitable for those under the age of sixteen since worksheet one requires of oneself ten years prior to the present.A suitable children's book on identity will be rolled out in 2021.The author is qualified in cognitive behavioural therapy, person centred counselling and holds qualifications in mental health. She has lectured widely in these subjects as well as issues relating to health conditions and how nutritional medicine can respond to these.A book which may be useful to read alongside this workbook is 'Effective treatment for anxiety, stress and depression'. There are many ways of categorising pain. It could, for example, be acute or chronic or muscular or neuropathic. Each type of pain has a different cause and, as such, requires a different response. What happens when we have breakthrough pain and cannot take anymore pain relieving medication as it would be harmful to do so? Is there something which can address this without harmful side effects? What are our own body's natural pain relievers? Can we harness their effects? This book answers all these questions and more. It is the ultimate guide to understanding pain and enabling the reader to understand how to provide an effective response often using nutritional substances which can be obtained without a visit to the GP.

Back pain results in thousands of lost working hours every year and impacts on the quality of life. In spite of the debilitating pain, there is little effective treatment. Patients are often informed that the pain will go away eventually but this doesn't help when the pain prevents you from completing even the simplest tasks of daily living. In many cases back pain is due to a degenerating condition and it has oft been thought that many causes of back pain such as osteoporosis or intervertebral disk problems are irreversible. is this correct? The author, formerly in orthopaedics herself, looks at the common causes of back pain, providing explanations for why they occur and more importantly how you can build a better, stronger and pain free back. She provides an effective treatment plan which works for the immediate pain but also begins to reverse the nutritional deficiencies which caused the pain in the first place. Research shows that by including correct nutritional substances, pain begins to dissipate as the underlying issues are addressed. Back pain is not just about taking enough calcium and vitamin D though. There are many other vital nutrients which are essential to build up healthy bones and cartilage. Any one that is missing can prevent others from functioning in the way that they were designed to. This is a book for those who suffer back pain and want to know how to banish it. The book specifically covers common, but painful, back conditions such as sciatica, lumbago, osteoporosis and osteoarthritis and is a useful handbook for anyone who has been unable to obtain relief for these conditions. .

This book is intended to address the more troubling symptoms of EDS that have been raised by patients with EDS. The most debilitating symptoms - as described to the author - are gastrointestinal symptoms, gastroparesis, pain and sleep disorders. These are addressed in some detail in this book but, of course they are not isolated from other symptoms and references to other symptoms, that afflict those with EDS, such as dysautonomia, will be examined. The author recommends that this book is used in conjunction with the book The EDS and Hypermobility Syndrome Diet Book since following this diet will ultimately improve the condition overall if it is followed. This book is intended to identify the underlying causes and treat the symptoms of EDS that exist during that time. As always, the author does not propose increasing prescribed medication to cope with symptoms. Bespoke nutrition is regenerating, not degenerating, so there should be less need for medication as time goes on. Besides, prescribed medication has so many side effects that much of the patient's medication is prescribed to reduce the side effects of the medication given in the first place. It is prescribed to mask symptoms and does not deal with the underlying cause. You will also be amazed at some of the causes of gastroparesis, which is very common in EDS, and begin to understand how to address it. What the author prescribes, in this book, is an understanding of the processes underpinning a disease and bespoke nutrition to address it. Some of the beneficial effects will be felt almost immediately and others will take time to manifest themselves but they will manifest themselves if the diet is adhered to. There is a life outside EDS and this book is intended to signpost you to it.

Cancers appear to be increasing at a time when people are finding it even more difficult to access the care they need. Not many decades ago, the likelihood of someone being diagnosed with cancer was one in four. Now it is one in two. While some people will wish to take cancer treatments offered through their local health service, others will want to look at alternative treatments as an adjunctive treatment or as an alternative treatment entirely. Sometimes patients are informed that there is 'nothing more that can be done' but the author warns that this only applies to the particular treatment that any specific organisation is willing or able to offer within their 'area of expertise' which rarely offers nutritional or homeopathic solutions. Patients should always have a choice but in order to have a choice, the information has to be available. This book focuses on the value of nutritional medicine, which has a great deal to offer the patient with cancer, without the debilitating side effects of some of the more current conventional treatments. Bespoke nutrition activates and increases the number of specific immune system cells which actively seek out and kill tumour cells. This approach firmly puts the patient in the driving seat helping them take an active and considered part in their treatment.

Many people will suffer from mental health issues, such as anxiety and depression, during their lives. For some it may only happen once but, for others, these become enduring in nature impacting not only their lives but the lives who care for them.Prolonged stress can lead to a depletion of neurochemicals which impact mood. Lack of motivation and lack of pleasure can be addressed very easily and quickly once you learn how to use food and the nutrients it holds to your advantage.Prescription drugs aren't necessary and do carry with them a lot of side effects such as weight gain and, strangely enough, anxiety. Some nutrients, on the other hand can impact mood in as little as a couple of minutes provided they are taken on an empty stomach. Just as they can reduce anxiety and depression, they can also increase it so choosing nutrients wisely can make all the difference to mental health.Once you have learned the very simple lessons about the impact that nutrients have on mental health then you will be able to make judicious choices about what would be beneficial. All these nutrients are easily available in food that you should be eating everyday but they are also obtainable in supplement form for those who need an extra boost. This book is infinitely readable by medical nutritionist, Lynne Noble, who has taught these skills to many people. More importantly, what she has to teach, works and has revolutionised the lives of many people.

There are many books on foraging but this book is for beginners who wish learn more about the amazing range of incredible foodstuffs growing right on their doorstep which they had previously not recognised as being edible. This book then takes this knowledge a little further, and shows you how to preserve it for later use or how to use it in a wide range of healthy dishes using minimum input from supermarket products. Indeed, as your knowledge progresses, you will find that your stressful visits to the supermarket are reduced considerably while the therapeutic walks in our beautiful countryside are increased. Foraging is a pastime which can be taken by yourself giving you time to reflect upon life but, as a child, it was a family outing where we gathered and processed an abundance of nature's harvest right on our doorstep. It was never a task I resented for there was more satisfaction in gathering your own lunch than there ever would have been nipping down to the supermarket in the car. There is a more serious side to this too. Food shortages appear to be on the cards and in order to supplement the diet in order to keep healthy, a basic knowledge of foraging, at the very least - is necessary. Once you can identify ten edible plants then you are on the way to becoming self sufficient. Many of these plants are available during the winter but it is knowing which ones and further, how to process them, that gives you the edge when it comes to self-sufficiency in the winter months. A little knowledge of their nutritional value is included since many plants produce an abundance of complex carbohydrates but we also need fats and protein in order to stay healthy. There are some plants which produce excellent amounts of protein and fats. Understanding which these are will help you make wise choices when it comes to feeding yourself - and your family - off the land

Migraine must be a contender for one of the most debilitating conditions and misunderstood conditions that there are. The impact that it has on the sufferer and their significant others is immeasurable and the working hours lost are great. Migraineurs are incapable of taking care of themselves never mind a young family when they are struck down so it is especially important that there is effective treatment for this debilitating condition.Although there are treatments available on prescription, many do not work or have unacceptable side effects or are taken too late in the stages of migraine. So, what are the stages of migraine? Why don't some migraine treatments work? Are there nutritional supplements that I can take that will work well but without the side effects of prescription medication? Is it possible to change the course of migraine once it has begun or shorten it if it is in full swing? The author, a medical nutritionist and a former migraineur herself, takes you through the stages of migraine explaining what happens at each stage and how intervention at each stage can prevent the migraine from progressing. Finally, she reveals the breakthrough that has meant that she has been able to stop her migraines altogether by simple dietary interventions which target the process prior to its initiation.

There is no doubt that gastroparesis is on the rise. It is associated with medical conditions such as diabetes, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's disease and connective tissue disorders, to name but a few. Many of these diseases are also on the rise but each is characterised by different causes underpinning gastroparesis. These causes need to be examined in detail before a lifetime of low fibre diets is succumbed to. Gastroparesis - as debilitating and distressing as it can be - can be a symptom of our life style choices which are so entrenched in our culture that they have become the norm and are seen as harmless. We all know that opioids can be constipating and delay gastric emptying but what other oft used analgesics have similar effects? What over the counter medicines slow peristaltic action? What are the hormonal and nervous contributions to peristaltic action? Can we change their response and, if so, how? The author examines common causes of gastroparesis and, more importantly, how to address them, without medication. It moves beyond accepting the condition and its dietary limitations to actively seeking to eliminate it.

Many years ago I undertook a piece of research on memory decline. Research generally takes you into avenues that are not the main focus of your research but are intriguing enough to make you want to return to that particular area in the future. My research led me to investigate cholesterol a little further. Sure, I had heard of it but didn't really know much about it, nor what it did. I had heard it was 'bad' and needed to be kept reined in by medication known as statins but, when I delved further, I came to understand just how much we need cholesterol in order to maintain a healthy and productive life. The impact on our health is so far reaching that this liquid gold and its demonization is incongruous with basic common sense. My body of research grew and grew and, as it did so, I became more and more alarmed at the devastating damage on the human body that artificially lowering cholesterol levels, through taking statins, can do.How did we come to an acceptance that mass medication of populations, with statins has become the norm especially when all robust peer reviewed studies have demonstrated that there is no connection between high cholesterol and cardiovascular risk? Indeed, we have been fed myths galore and they have become so much of our conversation that we now believe them with all our hearts. This is a dangerous thing to do. Look behind the hype and you will begin to see the falsehoods that have been perpetuated by those whose interests do not lie with the patients who will be fed statins. Is there such a thing as good and bad cholesterol? Well, no! Cholesterol is cholesterol with a diversity of amazing benefits for the human body but very few people will go out and seek this information for themselves. This book is intended to reveal the truth about cholesterol and statins. It will also reveal the real culprit behind cardiovascular disease and what an ordinary lay person can do to lower that risk. It will demonstrate why taking statins can shorten your life and be responsible for heart disease and how research has shown that taking statins can also dramatically increase your risk of neurodegenerative disorders. Finally, this book reveals the over the counter nutrient that can reverse heart disease and further, requires no more effort to take than prescribed medication and without the side effects.

Abdominoplasties are performed for a number of reasons other than for just cosmetic purposes. A diastasis recti ( otherwise known as mummy tummy) often results in a permanent and unacceptable gap in the midline of the abdomen. Not many people are aware that these gaps are not only unsightly but can result in recurring backache and other symptoms which permanently reduce the quality of life. So, what happens during an abdominoplasty? Is it for everyone? What are common post-operative complications and are there any potential long term unwanted complications?. The author takes us through an abdominoplasty and looks at the benefits as well as the problems which could occur . The book is illustrated throughout and is a good reference for anyone who wants to know more about this popular operation. .

Tinnitus is not a condition it is a symptom that something is wrong and has many underlying causes. Relegating it to a symptom often means that the devastating impact that it has on the sufferer's life is not really understood or taken seriously. However, this symptom should be taken seriously for it often is comorbid with the socially isolating hearing impairments and further, is often one of the first symptoms that those with subclinical dementia. often experience. In the early stages such degenerative diseases are reversible - indeed the nutrients which improve tinnitus and hearing impairment are often the same ones that are found to be deficient in neurodegenerative disease. Addressing one often addresses the more serious condition that tinnitus is a symptom of. Alongside tinnitus we have the generic hearing impairment with a well researched interconnectedness. As always, the author addresses these puzzling symptoms and conditions through bespoke nutrition, firstly investigating many of the causes of the above before applying bespoke nutrition. The author acknowledges that there are many devices that aid the above symptoms and conditions but argues that if the underlying cause is not corrected then any subclinical degeneration will eventually manifest itself and will be far harder, at that point, to reverse.

The answers to these and many more questions are answered using the latest research and draw on a number of disciplines. While the book particularly focuses on motor neuron disease, it provides lots of useful information which can be applied to most neurodegenerative conditions including multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease and the dementias.
