A description of Joseph Conrad's indebtedness to Heinrich Heine in their common use of allegory to explore the historical phases of religion and the impact of modern science on traditional beliefs. Especial attention is paid to Conrad's Rescue, Lord Jim, and Typhoon in addition to other of Conrad's works.
