Jude the Obscure

'Jude the Obscure' was Thomas Hardy's last novel, and proved so controversial that it was publicly burned by the Bishop of Wakefield. The controversy stemmed partly from its sexual themes and partly from its thinly-disguised attacks on organised religion. The novel tells the story of two star-crossed lovers, whose attempts to defy social convention leads to their unhappiness.
