Bag om Memoirs of a 28-Year-Old Thumb-Sucker: Ukubhambatha
Thumb-sucking is one of the most common habits in existence. Almost every other person is, has been, or knows of a thumb-sucker. Thumb-sucking is known as a way for infants and toddlers to soothe themselves, and they are usually weaned off thumb-sucking through various methods as they get older. However, some thumb-suckers, the gabhadiyas, never stop sucking their thumbs - they only stop doing it in public. This book tells the story of a mom who is a thumb-sucker and her three children who are also thumb-suckers. It is a story of how this habit helps her cope with adult problems, such as dealing with the anxiety of having to present a master's proposal and being a master's student, driving, dealing with weight issues, getting married, being unemployed, going to interviews, choosing between job offers, and leaving her family behind to start a new job in a new city. All along, thumb-sucking has been her therapy. It started when she was a baby, but now, just as she has matured in other aspects of her life, her thumb-sucking has matured too. She no longer sucks her thumb because she is bored or because she is addicted. She now sucks her thumb with an understanding of why she does it, when, and where she should do it. She understands herself better and only wishes to share her point of view.
