You have to have been on the remotest of remote desert islands to be unaware of the upstairs-downstairs life in the stately old houses of Britain and its strict social divisions. We've all at some stage been enthralled, enraged, fascinated - or a combination of all three - at this symbol of class distinction. It took a world war to bring about its demise.
