Respectable and dutiful Edna Pontellier has always done what was expected of her. Married to a successful businessman and mother of two sons, she is society's example of an ideal woman. But when Edna meets the young and fascinating Robert Lebrun, in a vacation in the Gulf of Mexico, she begins to question her defined role in society and doubt whether her character and the social identity she has, until now, strived to live up to have anything in common.
