John Carter is a prominent Florida attorney with a condition inherited from his grandfather that causes him to fall into deep memory lapses. Unknown to him, those episodes trigger an alter ego, also named John Carter, who works as a county sheriff.
Living completely separate lives, these identities have only vague hints that the other personality even exists. When the attorney accepts a teenage rape case at the behest of his adolescent daughter, the sheriff simultaneously becomes involved in a tragic car accident involving three fatalities.
