Bag om The Triumph of the Egg
This coveted collection of short stories by Sherwood Anderson (including the "Unlighted Lamp" and "Out of Nothing to Nowhere," contains some of the author's most celebrated works. In this edition, I have provided a more readable text with larger fonts and fewer errors than the original publication. The previous edition that I edited contained many formatting errors, typos, slips of the pen, and misspellings, which I have tried to remedy. That being said, numerous punctuation infelicities, as well as many grammatical quirks, which I felt uncomfortable in addressing, remain untouched. At the same time, I believe that they do not significantly hinder the reading. Another aim was to present various photos from the era in which the novel was written. They offer the reader vivid snapshots of a dynamic period of transition-what Anderson saw as the Age of Mechanization. Certainly his writing captures the era superbly, and thus it was not my intention to provide corresponding photos of the characters, towns, cities, and landscapes he so artfully depicted in his work. The photos provide historical background and additional detail about life lived more than a hundred years ago. For this reason, I have been careful to choose photos that do not extend beyond the publication date of The Triumph of the Egg. Lastly, I would like to thank the Library of Congress for making the photos available to the public.
