In today's global village and reliance on technology, competition for college places and jobs continues to increase. The ability to communicate effectively improves an individual's ability to succeed in education, in career and in life. This book is a practical resource that is useful for building and improving your vocabulary. It has six parts: vocabulary, general knowledge questions, word categories, confusable words, reference materials and useful resources. Part 1 has a step-by-step guide to learning and remembering new words. It presents alphabetical lists of words and examples of how to use mnemonic devices. The words of each alphabet include separate lists of three and four letter words followed by a final list with more letters. These words include important and more advanced English words. Appendix 1, Words That I Have Learnt, is a handy summary sheet to record your progress. Part 2 has sets of general knowledge questions, presented alphabetically. These have been included because general knowledge questions are included in selection processes and the possession of such useful information contributes to a candidate's success. The answers are also provided. Part 3 provides ample worksheets about various aspects of everyday life. Each worksheet provides an alphabetical list of useful words related to a particular subject. There are blank spaces for more words to be added. Appendices 10A and 10B are useful templates for writing new categories of words. Part 4 provides clarity on words that are often misspelt and misused. It has explanations and examples of confusable words, homographs, homonyms and homophones. There is also a comprehensive exercise to be completed. Part 5 has some valuable reference materials and includes information on the days of the week, months of the year, seasons, colours, spelling of numbers, a list of the names of animals, expressions of time, a list of countries, the names of their respective capital cities, citizens, currencies and languages, roman numerals and a list of prefixes and suffixes. Part 6 has helpful resources to enable you practise the spelling of new words, write sentences, set personal learning goals, plan study times, write book reviews and new categories of words
