At the conclusion of the Constitutional Convention in 1787, Mrs. Eliza (Elizabeth) Powel asked Ben Franklin what form of government the convention had cooked up. Franklin famously answered: "We have given you a republic, if you can keep it." "Keeping it" is the job of every citizen.
